about

A New is a curious title but one that makes total sense when Hutchings explains that the album reminds him of spring, a theme echoed in the vivid artwork by Reuben Wills (Infinity Broke, Mark Moldre band). "My last album of more traditional songs was called Bedsit, which reminds me of winter, so I wanted to change seasons on this one. Much of it is about turning over a new leaf," explains Hutchings.

The songs for A New were primarily written through the pandemic years in a different way to Hutchings' usual process of inspiration taken from travel or collaborations. "I set myself the task of going through acoustic sketches I’d recorded on my phone and turning them into finished songs. Like homework!" says Hutchings. "It was the closest I’d come to a songwriting routine, the goal was to complete these ideas."

Hutchings played all of the primary instruments on the album, recording them on Tascam eight track tape with Tim Kevin at his Sydney studio, before guests were brought in to add colour, tone and detail to the songs.

Clare Moore, known for her work with Dave Graney and her own releases, added fantastic vibraphone to 'Time's The Wave' and 'The Wren', while Kevin's piano playing was a key feature of the album. "I can’t overestimate how tasteful and intuitive his piano playing is on this record," Hutchings says. "He also totally understood my love of old school trebly 1940’s tinkly sounding piano. He remic’d the piano through a tiny little amplifier to give it that almost 78 rpm sound."

Elsewhere female harmonies add a wonderful contrast and counterpoint to Hutchings more rustic tone and his father Lee Hutchings adds some fine tenor saxophone on 'Green Seeps' and 'It's A Beginning' - the first time he'd played on his son's recordings in a dozen years.

Right across the album there's a wonderful balance between songcraft and subtle left turns, chosen to pique the listener's interest and provide an endlessly intriguing listening experience.

Hutchings cites a couple of contrasting influences that in turn highlight how adept he was in writing, arranging and mixing (for the first time) the album, and making the songs coexist so cohesively. There's the brisk jangle and rush of The Clean on 'On The Rack' and then a handful of songs later the feel of the groove and the upfront bass and guitar on 'It's A Beginning' took inspiration from James Brown. Califone and Sparklehorse are two other reference points that make sense in terms of the way Hutchings so brilliantly blends songcraft and musical subversion.

A New may celebrate fresh beginnings but in doing so it also encapsulates all the different strands of Hutchings musical past, a seamless sonic renewal of sorts for one of Australia's most relentlessly adventurous and intelligent musicians.
